We all fall off the planner wagon

Hello, Dears,

I’m going to let you in on a secret that not many planner people like to admit. We all fall off the planner wagon! Yep, no joke, even me.

There are times when I just can’t be bothered to open my planner and see what I have going on. There are times when my bag just says, nope that planner isn’t coming with us, you won’t need it today. Or I’ve left it in my handbag and just forgot it was in there. Do these actions make me feel like a hypocrite, yes they do, and I do feel bad having to admit it, but it’s true. We all have feelings, and sometimes I just don’t feel like planning. Sometimes I make myself believe that my plans are holding me back from feeling free, and I turn into a rebel!!!

Being a rebel makes me feel alive, and I’m like, see, that’s why some people don’t plan. Until I’ve nearly missed the first appointment, or I feel stressed and lost. Then I ask my journal, why do I feel this way? We all know the answer it gives me.

Let’s look back a few years

Well, I fell off the planner wagon this past month. Yep ME, I can fall also!!!

I had big plans for March, it being my birthday month, and all. From Leonie Dawson, I had learned to plan out my birthday, how I wanted to spend it, and with whom. I usually spend my birthdays on my own, but this time it turned out better than I had hoped. I got to spend the day with my daughter Zoe-Lee.

She said I was only to post 1 picture…., and look I did, it’s one picture 😉

What happened in March?

Well, to sum it up, I didn’t keep my promise to myself. I promised myself that I wasn’t going to be sad about my age, that I was going to find adventure.

The problem was that I had no idea what adventure I wanted to have. I didn’t journal about the experience I was seeking. I only journaled about how I would like to spend my birthday.

I always seem to get a holiday sickness that goes like this; 2 weeks of school holidays leave me, 1 week ill and the other to recuperate. Well, that’s just not going to help find my adventure now, is it? Also, I didn’t plan out my month properly. I wanted to go with the flow to see how it felt to just live without a structured plan.

Silly me, we all know I can’t live my life like that. Things never turn out right when I try to live without my planner. I procrastinate more, more than the norm that is. I don’t get the right things done. I do things like clean the house, work outside in the garden, surf on social media. But I don’t get something like a blog post published which are written but not transferred from paper to computer.

SO this past week I reviewed what went well and what not so.

I was kinda shocked to see that things were not all bad. I just didn’t feel like I had it all together. But I had accomplished more than I had expected. But still, I know I could have done more.

Here is what I used to review life:

I’ve made a video of what I use to review my month. To show you what I use to get back on track.

Now that school is back into full swing

I need to have my weeks all planned out and lessons sorted. I need to see what I have to do in the upcoming quarter.

So, don’t worry if you fall off the wagon, just jump back on. Make your life (Susan!) much easier by planning it out.

Happy Planning

  1. I love your advice about just jumping back on the wagon and reviewing all the good things that happened. It’s awesome advice not just for planning setbacks but for any kind of setback or challenge. It’s so important to be gentle with ourselves and not get stuck feeling guilty and angry about our mistakes. Focusing on the good things and reaching out for support (usually from you, Susan!) almost always helps me get out of a slump. Thanks for this great post, Susan. 🙂

  2. Hello Kirsten Dear,
Thank you for your lovely comment.
I know I’m good at helping peeps out (patting myself on the back, with this big massive grin on my face 😉 ) But sadly even people like me like to walk on the WILD Side!!!! HHHHAAAA
Hmmm and yes sadly realise that this way of living is just not for me.

This comment was written just after teaching a class of first years. Just trying to get my humor back!

  3. Hi Susan, Thank you so much for your wonderful column this week.
I am grateful to you for sending along this topic, about how you feel about planning and, how to go about it. I need to have all my lessons planned out and things sorted, as well.
I think we always have more sorted out than we think we do!
    Thank you ,

  4. Hello Sandy Dear,
Thank you for your lovely comment. I’m glad you agree with me, about having more done than we think. It really is so true. I think that we women beat ourselves up more than we should.
    Have a lovely week
    Yours Susan
