The Magic Planner

Hello Dear,

Just imagine this scenario…

You own the best newest up-to-date planner ever. It has everything that any planner lover could want. It looks perfect, it feels all smooth and soft. The paper quality is to die for. It has monthly and weekly spreads, a pen loop that holds all pen sizes and the closure is the best. You’ve spent loads of money on this planner.

Then you invite me into your house and my planner radar finds your planner catching dust in the kitchen. That poor lovely planner that you have spent so much time looking at online, debating with yourself if you really want to spend that kind of money on it. The hours you spent watching YouTube videos on how to use it and it’s still not working the way you hoped. You feel let down, cheated out of your hard-earned money. You’re so stressed you’ve no idea if you’re coming or going. Now that your busiest days are upon you, you have no idea if you’ll survive them.

I feel your pain Dear, I too wish that we lived in a Harry Potter World where you open up your planner and all your appointments jump out at you. Wouldn’t it be nice to just pick up a wand apparate to your next meeting?

Wouldn’t it be cool if Molly Weasley voice told you that “You have half an hour before your next appointment. The 5 minutes wiggle room we left in between appointments just isn’t enough, so hurry up dear or you’ll be very late.” Plus she mentions that you still need to buy eggs for tomorrow’s lunch. The best time to do that is between, picking your kids up from school and dropping them off at football practice.”

But even Molly can’t help you if you don’t open your planner and tell him how you would like your day to go. I mean not even in Hogwarts could they read your mind (or could they? I might have missed that part).

The power to getting rid of stress or overworking yourself.

What if we tried to bring a little magic into your everyday life? Let’s try and make your planner into the magic wand you have always dreamed of. We will start with easy mini-steps to not overwhelm you.

  • Let’s start by writing your birthday into your planner. Use your favourite pen and colour and write “Me Day” this will help you overcome the feeling of not wanting to mess up a new planner.
  • It’s time to write family and friends birthdays down this will help you not to forget to phone them, send them a text or write a card.
  • School holidays should be highlighted in your planner so you have an idea of when your kids will be home and might need a babysitter. If you don’t have children, it’s still something that I would add in to help with your holiday plans, don’t book when there is no school.
  • Write down any other school-related appointment and to-dos that you might already have. This will make life easier for you when planning out your work appointments. Also, kids, afterschool activities should be written down to stay on top of where your kids need to be.
  •  Carry your planner with you everywhere just like you do your mobile phone (picture Hermione Granger loaded with her wand and her book bag). You need to look inside more than once a day to stay on top of your tasks or appointments.

Use your planner as a wand when Miss Know-it-all Super Teachers Helper comes along wanting to give you a task that “You are so perfect at”.

This is how to put her back in her place with a smile. You hold up your planner like a wand and say a disarming spell. Or the one where you say “I’m sorry but I don’t have time”.

Hermione was the best time manager of all time with her turning-back-time-watch-chain-thing. She had to coordinate her school classes and be on time for all of them. But first, she had to have a school timetable, then plan and coordinate her lessons. You need to do just that, coordinate your tasks and your appointments.

Use your planner to make that perfect plan

  • Start by planning your own appointment and writing them into your planner.
  • Then make a side note of hubbies appointments, things like he’s on a business trip and won’t be home to help. Or when he’s working late so you know you have to bring the kids to bed and can’t go to yoga on a Wednesday evening unless you find a baby sitter.
  • Kids appointments, after-school activities and parents evenings. Hmmm, another tip here my Dear, when your kids come home with that piece of paper with school outings Write them down in your planner so that you don’t forget. Add a note on your fridge for all family members can see. You don’t want your child coming home and telling you that you forgot to put in a packed lunch for that outing they went on, now do you????
  • Between each appointment, you need to add in wiggle room of about 30 minutes to an hour before and after an appointment, more if need be. Just in case your appointment goes on for longer, you don’t get your knickers in a twist and feel stressed out.
  • Life will get stressful and if it does, bin some of the unimportant tasks that bug you and take away your time. Things like phoning Miss Busybody of the school committee and telling her you can’t take over a task because you don’t have time and that you believe that she will do a better job at it anyway (butter her up, it helps).

Take your planner with you everywhere and take charge of your day

I hope these tips help you a little my Dear.

Just try one of them out and see how you feel, then let me know in the comments below how it went

Have any questions? There’s enough space below in the comments for you to do so 😉

Happy planning

Yours
